Sam is a Chartered Certified Accountant and Director of Higginson James, providing accounting, tax, advisory and CFO support to UK businesses and individuals. He spent over a decade at Grant Thornton, one of the UK’s largest accountancy practices, working in the restructuring and insolvency team in London and Cambridge. His work included the administration of Greensill Capital Pty Limited, as part of the team realising approximately $4bn of assets under management, and pre-administration, benchmarking and contingency planning for clients across a wide range of sectors. This has given him a strong commercial perspective and the ability to navigate time-critical situations.
Before specialising in restructuring, Sam worked in audit in London, mainly with AIM and FTSE-listed clients as well as start-ups and owner-managed businesses. He reported to boards and supported clients with financial controls, compliance, grant reviews, pre-IPO preparation and fund management compliance. He also supports clients with compliance and advisory tax matters, including corporation tax, personal tax, capital gains tax and VAT.
Outside work, Sam is Honorary Treasurer of the Alpine Club, the world’s oldest mountaineering club, and a Trustee of the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust (HWDT), a charity carrying out vital research on cetaceans off the west coast of Scotland.
An experienced mountaineer, skier and diver, he is also a professional sailor who has competed in numerous yacht races and sailed extensively in remote, high-latitude regions. He offers a small range of maritime services alongside the main practice.
The adaptability, risk assessment, leadership and teamwork these pursuits develop directly inform his professional approach, helping him operate calmly and effectively in high-pressure environments. Combined with his qualifications and experience, this makes him a trusted adviser to clients in complex situations.
